Slate for Slack
Slack app ยท Free with any Slate account
Slate recordings play right in Slack.
Paste a link and your teammates watch it in the channel. When someone views, reacts or comments, you hear about it in Slack, as a message from Slate.
Needs a Slate account; a free one works. Read the privacy policy for Slack.
Link previews
Paste a link. Watch it where it landed.
- Paste a Slate link Any slatevideo.com recording link, in a channel, a thread or a direct message, the same way you would paste any other link.
- Public recordings play in place A compact player right in the message, with sound, plus buttons for the first link from the recording and for Watch on Slate. Nobody has to leave Slack to watch a two minute walkthrough.
- Private ones stay private A recording that needs a sign-in shows a link and nothing else: no title, no thumbnail, no player. Slack sees exactly what a stranger with the link would see.
The preview follows each recording's own privacy setting, and changes when you change it. The recordings themselves never leave Slate; Slack shows our player in a frame.
Notifications
Your notifications, as direct messages.
Once Slate is in a workspace, the notifications you already get by email can come to you in Slack too. They go to you alone, from the Slate app, never to a channel.
- First view
- Somebody opened your recording for the first time.
- New viewer
- Each new person who watches it.
- Reactions
- An emoji left at a moment in the recording.
- Comments
- What they wrote, with a link that opens the recording at that moment.
Each one has its own Slack switch in Slate's Notifications settings. Turn off the ones you do not want and the rest keep coming.
Installing
Four steps, about a minute.
- 01 Click Add to Slack On this page, or from the Slate listing in the Slack Marketplace.
- 02 Sign in to Slate Or create a free account. Already signed in, and this step goes by on its own.
- 03 Approve in Slack Slack shows what Slate asks for and which workspace it is for. Choose Allow.
- 04 Back in Settings You land on your Slate Settings page with the workspace listed under Slack. Paste a link to try it.
Some workspaces let only admins add apps. If yours does, Slack offers to send your admin a request instead.
Permissions
What Slate asks Slack for, and why.
Seven permissions, each for one job. Slate does not ask to read your messages, your channels or your files, and it cannot.
| Permission | What it is for |
|---|---|
links:readlinks:write | See when a slatevideo.com link is posted, and attach the preview to it. |
links.embed:write | Play a public recording inline, in the message, instead of just linking to it. |
chat:writeim:write | Send you your own Slate notifications as a direct message from the Slate app. |
users:readusers:read.email | Find your Slack account by the email you have verified with Slate, so a notification reaches you and nobody else. |
Your data
What we keep, and how to remove it.
- The workspace ID and name, so we know which workspace a link came from.
- A bot token, stored on our servers and used only to call Slack. It never reaches a browser.
- The Slack user IDs of Slate users, matched by their verified Slate email, so notifications can be delivered.
We never read message content. When a link is posted, Slack sends us that link and nothing else from the message. Nothing from Slack is used for advertising or to train AI models.
To remove it all, choose Disconnect next to the workspace in Slate's Settings, or remove the Slate app from the workspace in Slack. Either one deletes the workspace's record, its token and every Slack user link that came with it.
